The 2026 edition of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) National Sports Festival has come to an end in Enugu, with Federal Government College Enugu emerging as the overall winner.
The school finished at the top of the medals table after winning eight gold medals, three silver, and two bronze, beating other strong competitors from across the country.
Coming in second place was FGC Ikot Ekpene Old Students Association, which recorded seven gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals after a tough contest.
The event attracted about 30 unity schools, with former students from federal government colleges nationwide gathering for the competition. The week-long sports festival took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and featured a wide range of sporting activities.
Participants competed in events such as football, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, golf, tug of war, and indoor games like ludo, draughts, and snooker.
Despite putting up a strong fight to defend its title, FGC Ikot Ekpene had to settle for second place as FGC Enugu dominated the competition and secured the top spot.
Speaking after the event, the President-General of USOSA, Michael Magaji, said the festival is not just about winning medals but also about bringing people together.
He explained that sports play an important role in promoting unity, strengthening relationships, and encouraging national development. According to him, the Enugu event created another opportunity for old students to reconnect and celebrate their shared background.
Magaji added that while the association is focused on improving public education, sports also help build lasting connections among members, many of whom have known each other for decades.
He also stressed that USOSA’s efforts are voluntary and aimed at giving back to the schools that helped shape their lives. He said the group is working hard to restore the high standards that unity schools were once known for and hopes to improve them even further in the future.
