The first-ever South-East Open Scrabble Championship has ended in Umuahia, with Abia State emerging as the overall winner after a strong performance. The team recorded 18 victories and one draw out of 22 matches to secure the top spot.
Anambra State finished in second place with 16 wins and one draw, while Imo State came third after winning 14 games.
Enugu and Ebonyi states placed fourth and fifth, missing out on the top three positions.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Jane Igwe, expressed appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for supporting the hosting of the tournament.
He also commended all the players from across the South-East for their focus, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
In his remarks, the Director of Sports in Abia State, Obioma George, thanked the participants for coming from different states to take part in the event. He added that the competition helped discover new talents who could represent the region and Nigeria in future scrabble tournaments.

Meanwhile, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Chinedu Thorpe, advised young Nigerians to consider playing scrabble professionally, noting that it can be a positive way to use their time and avoid involvement in crime.
