Defending champions Bayelsa Queens finally returned to winning ways in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six playoffs after edging Rivers Angels 2-1 in a thrilling encounter.

The victory marked Bayelsa Queens’ first success of the playoff campaign and provided a much-needed boost to their title defence hopes.

The Prosperity Girls started brightly and were rewarded shortly before halftime when Chiamaka Ezekwugo rose highest in the box to power home a header, giving her side a deserved lead.

Rivers Angels responded strongly after the break and found a way back into the match in the 58th minute. Abasiofon Uwah calmly converted a penalty to level the score and set up an intense finish.

But Bayelsa Queens refused to let the setback affect them. Just five minutes later, Dorshima Taarnum produced the decisive moment of the game, finding the back of the net to restore her team’s advantage.

Despite late pressure from Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens held firm to secure all three points and end their difficult run in the competition.

The win lifts Bayelsa Queens to third place on the Super Six table with four points from three matches, keeping them firmly in the race as the playoffs continue.
