Residents across Lagos turned out in large numbers on Saturday, April 25, 2026, to take part in the revived monthly sanitation exercise, earning praise from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government said the clean-up exercise recorded strong participation in many parts of the state. Residents were seen clearing waste and tidying their surroundings as part of efforts to promote a cleaner environment.
The exercise took place across several areas, including Ikorodu, Badagry, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Ikeja, and Agege, where many people actively joined in keeping their communities clean.
The commissioner said the governor was impressed by the level of commitment shown by residents, noting that many people are returning to the habit of maintaining a healthy and neat environment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu thanked Lagosians for responding to the call, describing their actions as a sign of responsibility and love for the state. He encouraged residents to continue supporting efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone.
At the same time, the governor warned against careless disposal of waste, especially as the rainy season approaches. He stressed the importance of proper waste management to avoid flooding and environmental problems.
According to the statement, the state government has already started clearing gutters and drainage systems across Lagos to reduce the risk of flooding, following predictions of heavy rainfall in the coming months.
The government also said the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources is working closely with the Ministry of Information and Strategy to educate the public on the dangers of dumping refuse indiscriminately and blocking drainage channels.
The monthly sanitation programme was reintroduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on March 14, when he personally joined top officials to supervise and take part in a clean-up exercise along Agege Motor Road in Mushin.
