The leader of the Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has called on members to protect the unity of the organisation and avoid anything that could divide it.
He made the appeal on Monday during his 100th birthday celebration, urging members of the group to settle their differences and work together for the progress of Afenifere.
Fasoranti said the organisation should always speak with one voice, stressing that it was created as one strong family for the Yoruba people and must not be broken.
The elder statesman also reflected on his long life, saying he has lived through major periods in Nigeria’s history, including colonial rule, independence, wars, and peace times.
Speaking emotionally, he recalled personal losses, including the death of his wife, Oladiwura, and two of his daughters. He said the pain remains, but he has continued to find strength in his faith in God.
He added that life has taught him to accept both joy and sorrow, saying everything comes according to God’s will.
Fasoranti also spoke about his years in public service, saying he chose to serve the people with a focus on sacrifice rather than personal gain.
According to him, Afenifere taught him that leadership is about patience, forgiveness, and avoiding bitterness.
He said he served with a clean heart and no grudges, adding that he hopes younger leaders will follow the same example of honesty and selfless service.
