Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared his support for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as the person he wants to succeed him in the 2027 governorship election.
The governor made the announcement after a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed top government officials and party leaders of his interest to contest for the state’s top job.
The meeting brought together members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and former party leader Ganiyu Solomon, among other senior stakeholders.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said the decision to support Hamzat was agreed upon by all leaders present. He described the deputy governor as someone fully prepared and experienced enough to lead Lagos State.
According to him, Hamzat understands the system of governance very well and is familiar with how the state administration works.
Sanwo-Olu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, saying the president played a key role in shaping both his own political journey and that of Hamzat, as well as their working relationship over the years.
