The Nigerian Police Force has released new details on the killing of a suspect by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.
According to reports, on April 26, 2026, a 28-year-old man identified as Mene Ogidi received a parcel from a friend sent from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The package was delivered to him by a driver.
After collecting it, he reportedly took the parcel to a motor park with plans to send it to Sapele. The package had the name, address, and phone number of the supposed receiver written on it.
However, people at the scene later searched the parcel and discovered it contained a fake Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition. Shocked by the discovery, they carried out a citizen’s arrest and alerted the police.
A police team led by ASP Nuhu Usman arrived and took custody of the suspect.
But according to the police statement, instead of following proper procedure, ASP Usman allegedly shot and killed the already arrested and unarmed suspect.
The body of Mene Ogidi has since been deposited in a mortuary, while authorities await an official autopsy to support ongoing investigation and prosecution.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered a full investigation immediately after the incident.
He explained that findings from the Police Monitoring Unit showed that ASP Usman and members of his team committed serious misconduct, abused their office, and acted in a way that led to an unlawful killing.
The police spokesperson stressed that no suspicion of crime justifies extra-judicial killing.
He added that the case file has now been sent to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for review and possible prosecution. The police said they will fully cooperate to ensure justice is served in court.
DCP Placid also revealed that the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members linked to the case are still on the run, adding that efforts are ongoing to arrest them.
He assured Nigerians that the police will not protect any officer who breaks the law, saying accountability applies to all ranks without exception.
According to him, the force is handling the case with transparency and is aware that both Nigerians and the international community are watching closely.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the public to remain calm and trust the legal process as investigations continue.
