Fresh details have emerged about the killing of a 200-level part-time Political Science student of the University of Benin, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Sunday at the school’s main gate in Ugbowo, Benin City.
Earlier reports suggested the incident was linked to cult-related violence. However, new information now indicates that the attack may have been connected to a failed financial deal involving about N90 million.
The victim, identified as Alexander Omogiate, was one of three people inside a Mercedes-Benz GLK when armed men in another GLK vehicle blocked them and opened fire at close range. The attackers reportedly fled immediately after the shooting.
Another victim, Dorathy Ubah, who was said to have been caught by a stray bullet, reportedly died on Monday while receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). However, the Edo State Police Command has stated that only Omogiate was confirmed dead, while others are still alive and responding to treatment.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem confirmed that investigations have begun into the incident, which occurred on May 10, 2026, around 5 p.m. near the university gate.
She explained that the attackers arrived in a white GLK vehicle, blocked the victims’ car, and opened fire before escaping. The injured victims, including a female passerby, were rushed to UBTH for emergency treatment.
The police also listed the occupants of the attacked vehicle as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full investigation into the shooting and assured that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible. Security has also been increased at the hospital to protect the victims receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest the attack may be linked to an alleged internet fraud dispute involving N90 million. A source claimed the conflict started after disagreements over how to share the money.
According to the source, tension had been building for some time after one of the parties allegedly failed to fulfill an earlier agreement to share the funds. The disagreement reportedly escalated into threats and violent confrontations on campus.
The source further alleged that on the day of the incident, Omogiate was trailed from his classroom after writing his exam and was attacked at the school gate.
Police say investigations are still ongoing to uncover the full circumstances behind the killing and bring those involved to justice.
