Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has shared how moving back to Nigeria in 2012 changed her music career, saying the shift from R&B to Afrobeats was not easy at the beginning.
Before returning home, she had built her career abroad as a backup vocalist, working with international stars like George Michael and Mary J. After returning to Nigeria, she joined Mavin Records as she followed the fast-growing local music scene.
Speaking in a recent interview with TVC, the “Kele Kele Love” singer explained that adapting to Afrobeats from her R&B background was difficult at first. However, she said her former label boss, Don Jazzy, played a big role in helping her adjust.
According to her, Don Jazzy encouraged her to think beyond limits and believe in her ability to explore different sounds.
She said he helped her step out of her comfort zone and introduced her to new styles of music outside R&B.
Tiwa Savage explained that this change in mindset made her realise that talent is not restricted to one genre, but can grow in many directions if properly developed.
She added that she does not regret returning to Nigeria, saying the move and her transition into Afrobeats helped shape her successful music career today.
