The Imo State Police Command has launched a full-scale search operation after a 17-year-old student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, was reportedly kidnapped.
The young student, who is in her first year studying Microbiology, was said to have been taken along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area.
According to the police, officers quickly moved to the area after receiving the report. Working together with local vigilante groups, they began searching nearby bushes and surrounding locations in an effort to find the missing student.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday. He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take charge of the case and intensify efforts using intelligence and collaboration with other security agencies.
He explained that the move is part of urgent steps to ensure the safe rescue of the student and the quick arrest of those responsible.
Okoye also revealed that security has been strengthened around the FUTO area and nearby communities. He said police patrols, surveillance, and visible security presence have been increased to prevent further incidents.
The Commissioner of Police assured students, school officials, and residents that their safety remains a top priority. He urged everyone to stay calm, be alert, and continue with their daily activities without fear.
