The Nigeria Police Force has begun an investigation after a viral video showed a man driving a commercial bus in Lagos while wearing clothing with police markings and allegedly threatening passengers.
The incident reportedly happened around Eko Bridge in Lagos. In the video, the driver is seen wearing a T-shirt and cap with “NPF/Police” written on them while arguing with passengers inside the bus.
In the recording, one passenger challenges the driver after he allegedly made threats to harm commuters and dump their bodies in a nearby river. Other passengers also threatened to record the situation and post it online, but the driver reportedly told them to go ahead.
A witness who shared the video on social media platform X, identified as Oyindamola, claimed the problem started when the driver suddenly stopped the bus during the trip to buy fuel without informing passengers. When passengers complained about the unexpected stop, the driver allegedly became angry and issued threats.
Reacting to the viral video, the Force Public Relations officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the police are already reviewing the footage to determine what happened.
He explained that although the man was seen wearing items with “NPF/Police” labels, he was not in official police uniform, and his identity or whether he is a serving officer has not yet been confirmed.
According to him, “We are aware of the video circulating online showing the behaviour of an individual in Lagos.
“From what we have seen so far, the person is not wearing a full police uniform, although he has police-branded clothing. His identity and status are still under investigation.
“Any behaviour that threatens or intimidates members of the public is not acceptable and does not represent the Nigeria Police Force.”
He added that the public is encouraged to assist with useful information that could help identify the man, urging anyone with details to report to the nearest police station or use official police communication channels.
The police assured that the matter is being taken seriously and that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is completed.
