Security forces under the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Savannah Shield (OPSS), have arrested five suspected informants working with bandits and terrorist groups during separate operations in Niger State.
A statement from Captain Jamilu Muhammed Yahaya, the Acting Media Information Officer at the JTF North Central headquarters, said troops also recovered mobile phones, cash, and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.
In one of the operations carried out along the Doro axis in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area on June 6, 2026, soldiers arrested three suspects believed to be part of a bandit network operating around Duru near the Kainji Lake National Park area.
During the arrest, troops recovered two Tecno button phones, an MP3 device, and recorded messages suspected to be used for propaganda and incitement. The device reportedly contained claims about a kidnapping incident in Kaduna State and alleged ransom payment of ₦60 million. Officers also found ₦113,400 in cash.
Investigations are still ongoing, while the suspects remain in custody as security forces continue efforts to track other members of the network.
In a separate patrol operation, troops from the 221 Battalion under JTF North Central Savannah Shield arrested two more suspected informants around the cantonment perimeter fence.
Preliminary findings suggest the suspects were gathering intelligence on military movements around the area.
Further checks on one suspect’s mobile phone revealed a disturbing image of a beheaded person, dated May 2, 2026, raising concerns about possible links to violent extremist activities.
Items recovered from them include one Android phone, one Tecno keypad phone, a motorcycle, and ₦86,100 in cash.
Authorities say the suspects are currently under investigation as operations continue to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
