Tony Elumelu denies divorce rumours as police arrest suspects behind false reports
The Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has strongly denied viral claims that he has separated from his wife.
In a statement released over the weekend, UBA described the reports circulating online as false, harmful, and deliberately misleading. The bank made it clear that there is no truth to the story suggesting any marital crisis involving its chairman.
According to the statement, security agencies have already taken action. Three individuals believed to be responsible for creating and spreading the false divorce story have been arrested.
The company said the publication was not only untrue but also damaging to the reputation of Mr. Elumelu and his family.
Meanwhile, the case has taken another turn as the family of one of the suspects, identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe, has pleaded for leniency.
His sister, Ngozi Akunemeihe, made a public appeal in a video shared on Instagram, asking Elumelu to show mercy.
Also reacting, activist Omoyele Sowore called for the release of the suspect.
The situation follows a wave of unverified and false reports that recently spread across social media about Elumelu’s personal life, which have now been officially denied.
