Ebonyi crisis: Lawyer says lifting of Amasiri curfew not enough, insists on legal action
Human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has said there is no reason to celebrate the lifting of the curfew imposed on the Amasiri community in Ebonyi State by Governor Francis Nwifuru.
The lawyer explained that even though the curfew has been removed, it will not affect the court case he has already filed against the state government.
Idam said his legal action will continue until all his demands are fully met, including compensation for victims affected by alleged security operations in the area.
He is also demanding payment for damages suffered by residents, including alleged killings, injuries, emotional trauma, and destruction of property during the enforcement of the curfew.
According to him, homes and properties destroyed during the operation must also be rebuilt or compensated by the government.
In a statement, Idam said the lifting of the curfew should not be seen as something to celebrate because, in his view, the restrictions were unnecessary from the beginning.
He noted that although he acknowledged the reversal of the curfew, it does not change the ongoing court case he has filed against security authorities and others involved.
The lawyer stressed that the case will continue until justice is fully achieved and all reliefs requested are granted.
He added that government power should be used to protect citizens, not to harm or intimidate them, insisting that the matter must be properly addressed in court.
