The Nigeria Police Force has urged Nigerians to remain calm following reports of alleged xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa, warning against any form of retaliation within the country.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns that the reported incidents could trigger attacks on South African citizens, businesses, or diplomatic interests in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Department and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid, the police disclosed that the issue was reviewed during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the leadership of the National Security Adviser.
According to the statement, security and intelligence agencies carefully assessed the situation and its possible impact on national security, while considering appropriate measures to address any emerging threats.
The police assured citizens that the Federal Government is actively engaging relevant authorities through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to protect Nigerians and ensure a peaceful resolution of the matter.
The statement stressed that although Nigerians may be worried about the welfare of their compatriots in South Africa, nobody should resort to violence, intimidation, destruction of property, or any other unlawful action.
“Taking revenge into your own hands is not the solution. Any act capable of disturbing public peace, promoting hate, or threatening national security will be treated as a criminal offence,” the police warned.
The Force further emphasized that Nigeria remains a country governed by law, and every individual legally residing in the nation, regardless of nationality, is entitled to protection.
It noted that any attempt to target South African citizens, companies, diplomatic facilities, or other legitimate interests in Nigeria would be met with the full weight of the law.
The police also cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified information, rumours, or inflammatory content online, especially on social media platforms.
According to the Force, false reports and provocative messages could worsen tensions, create panic, and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the issue.
To strengthen security, the Nigeria Police Force said it has intensified surveillance and activated additional security measures around strategic locations and critical national assets in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies.
Authorities reassured the public that they remain committed to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and preventing any breakdown of law and order.
