The Headquarters of the Nigerian Army 8 Division has responded to allegations raised in a petition by human rights lawyer Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo over claims of torture and inhumane treatment at its detention facility in Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto.
The petition accused the military of abuse, reprisal attacks, and harsh treatment of detainees, and linked these claims to the death of Lance Corporal Bala Hudu.
In a statement signed by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division and Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, the army said the allegations were incorrect and misleading. It also restated its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
The army explained that the late soldier was earlier involved in a criminal case in April 2023 after he allegedly killed a commercial motorcycle rider in Katsina State. This led to a military investigation and court-martial process.
According to the statement, during the trial it was discovered that Hudu had existing health challenges such as eye problems, allergic reactions, and high blood pressure. He was said to have been receiving regular treatment at the 8 Division medical facility.
The army added that because of his condition, he was allowed access to his family and legal representatives and was placed under close medical supervision, including support from a nursing assistant.
On April 15, 2026, the soldier was taken to the emergency unit after complaining of headache, weakness, and difficulty breathing. Medical officers reportedly diagnosed him with severe pneumonia and malaria and began treatment.
However, his condition worsened on April 17, 2026, and he later died from complications linked to his illness.
Following his death, the General Officer Commanding of the division ordered a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances. The army said the investigation is ongoing and being carried out in a transparent manner.
The statement strongly denied claims of torture or abuse in its detention facility, describing them as false. It said its detention processes follow international standards and are designed to protect the dignity and welfare of detainees.
It further noted that all military justice procedures comply with the Armed Forces Act and Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution, which protects human dignity.
The army also stated that detainees are given regular medical checks and care, with attention to both physical and mental health.
It stressed that the division operates a strict zero-tolerance policy against torture, unlawful punishment, or degrading treatment, adding that any officer found guilty would face disciplinary action.
The statement also invited Chief Omirhobo and other interested parties to participate in the ongoing Board of Inquiry scheduled from April 29 to May 10, 2026, saying the process is open and transparent.
The 8 Division concluded by urging the public to disregard what it described as false claims, assuring that its investigation and internal systems remain committed to justice, accountability, and human rights.
