The Government of Kaduna State has stepped up public awareness and emergency preparedness efforts following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction report by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The report listed Kaduna among the states likely to experience flooding during the 2026 rainy season due to expected above-normal rainfall.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the government said it is already taking early action to reduce risks and protect lives and property through public sensitisation and disaster response planning.
According to the forecast, rainfall in Kaduna State is expected to begin between May 19 and June 10, 2026, while the rainy season may end between October 5 and October 21, 2026.
The report also warned of a possible 21-day dry spell between June and August, a condition that could increase the risk of flooding and other environmental challenges across the state.
Maiyaki said the government is treating the prediction seriously and urged residents to cooperate with safety measures to reduce potential damage from flooding.
He explained that the Ministry of Information and Culture, together with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, has already launched a statewide awareness campaign to educate people on how to prevent and respond to flood emergencies.
Residents were advised to keep drainage systems clean, avoid dumping waste into waterways, and take basic protective steps such as using sandbags and other local flood control methods where necessary.
The Commissioner also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, media groups, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support the campaign by spreading accurate information and encouraging environmental cleanliness.
He added that KADSEMA has begun assessing flood-prone communities, strengthening emergency response plans, and positioning rescue teams in high-risk areas ahead of possible flooding.
Maiyaki reaffirmed that the safety of residents remains a top priority for the state government, stressing that coordinated action will continue throughout the rainy season to reduce disaster risks.
