Kano Begins Medical Screening for 3,000 Couples Ahead of Mass Wedding Programme
The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced the start of medical screening for individuals selected to take part in the state’s planned mass wedding programme.
According to the board, all prospective couples from 24 local government areas are expected to visit their nearest Hisbah offices on Monday, June 8, 2026, to begin the screening process.
Speaking on Sunday, the Deputy Commander-General of the board, Mujahideen Aminudddeen, said the exercise is an important requirement for those hoping to participate in the government-sponsored wedding initiative involving 3,000 people.
The local government areas included in the first phase of the exercise are Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai and Madobi.
Aminudddeen explained that the medical tests will check the health status of participants and help ensure compatibility before marriage. The screening will include tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, drug abuse, while female applicants will also undergo pregnancy tests.
He noted that only applicants who successfully complete the screening process will be approved to take part in the mass wedding ceremony.
The Kano State Government had earlier revealed plans to support the marriage of 1,500 men and 1,500 women under the programme. Beneficiaries are expected to include widows, divorcees, orphans and other vulnerable residents with limited financial means.
As part of the support package, each groom will receive ₦100,000 to assist with marriage expenses. The government will also provide newly married couples with essential household items, including beds, mattresses and wardrobes.
In addition, beneficiaries will receive food items and a ₦100,000 business grant aimed at helping them establish small-scale businesses and improve their economic well-being after marriage.
The initiative is part of the state’s efforts to support vulnerable groups, strengthen family values and improve the living conditions of low-income residents across Kano.
