The Plateau State Police Command has officially launched a new security outfit known as the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU), aimed at improving quick response to serious crimes across the state.
The initiative, introduced in line with directives from the Nigeria Police Force leadership, is designed to ensure faster action against violent crimes while still maintaining professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Bassey Ewah, said the new unit was created to strengthen the police response to rising security threats and improve overall operational efficiency.
He explained that officers assigned to the VCRU were carefully selected based on their experience, discipline, and proven track record in handling sensitive security operations.
According to him, the officers have undergone relevant training to deal with violent crime situations effectively while remaining fully guided by the law and committed to protecting citizens.
To boost transparency and public trust, the Commissioner also announced the creation of a Civilian Oversight Mechanism that will monitor the activities of the unit and handle complaints from the public when necessary.
He stressed that all officers remain subject to the provisions of the Police Act 2020 and other applicable regulations, warning that any misconduct will be punished accordingly.
“No officer is above the law. Any abuse of power or misconduct will attract strict disciplinary action,” he warned.
During the event, the Commissioner also displayed suspects arrested through joint operations involving the Intelligence Response Team and the newly introduced unit.
A total of six suspects were paraded for offences including cattle rustling, theft, drug-related crimes, and illegal possession of firearms.
Items recovered from them included locally made rifles, revolver guns, a pump-action weapon, AK-47 magazines, and live ammunition.
He said investigations are still ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court once the process is completed.
The Commissioner further assured residents that the VCRU will work closely with communities, civil society groups, and other security stakeholders to improve safety and reduce violent crime across Plateau State.
He also called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that can help prevent crime and enhance policing efforts.
