Seyi Makinde has said that the creation of state police in Nigeria can no longer be delayed, describing it as an urgent step needed to improve national security.
The governor made this known while speaking about growing insecurity in the country, urging the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu to speed up action on establishing state police without further delay.
Makinde explained that allowing states to have their own police force would help strengthen the country’s security system and reduce criminal activities across different regions.
He made the comments during the primary election of the Allied Peoples Movement held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to him, state police would also improve intelligence gathering at the local level, making it easier to detect and respond quickly to security threats.
The governor added that with state-controlled policing, each state would be better equipped to handle its own security challenges more effectively.
Makinde maintained that the current security structure is overstretched and needs urgent reform to address rising insecurity nationwide.
