Former Kayode Fayemi, ex-Governor of Ekiti State, has said he played a role in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 general elections.
Fayemi made the remark during an interview on the State Affairs podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, where he discussed the outcome of the last presidential election and the shifting political landscape in Nigeria.
He described the performance of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as a “phenomenon,” saying Obi’s rise changed the usual political calculations in the country.
The former governor also spoke about growing concerns within the All Progressives Congress, noting that the party he once helped build has moved away from its original principles.
According to him, Nigeria needs a more inclusive political system that does not shut out large sections of the population from governance.
Fayemi also called for fairer primary elections and wider reforms in the country’s political structure to strengthen democracy.
He stressed that politics should not be about “winner-takes-all,” warning that such a system leaves many citizens feeling excluded.
In his words, while he supported Tinubu’s emergence as president, he believes the APC has lost direction, and Peter Obi’s influence remains a major political force in Nigeria today.
