The Nigerian Army has said its troops successfully stopped a planned attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an operation in Imezi Owa, Enugu State.
According to the Army, the incident happened on May 6, 2026, when soldiers of Sector 1 under Operation UDO KA, working with other security agencies, were on an intelligence-based patrol in the area.
The patrol team was reportedly acting on information about suspected criminal collaborators in the community when they moved into the area on foot.
During the operation, troops were ambushed from a building and came under heavy attack. Three soldiers were injured in the exchange.
Despite the surprise attack, the Army said its personnel quickly responded, regained control of the situation, and successfully stopped the assault. The wounded soldiers were evacuated and are currently receiving medical treatment in a military hospital.
The statement, signed by Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, also revealed that explosives stored inside the attackers’ hideout went off during the firefight. The blast caused a fire that destroyed the building used as the hideout.
After the incident, soldiers searched the surrounding area and reportedly discovered more improvised explosive devices (IEDs), handmade grenades, and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities. The structure was later destroyed to prevent further use for criminal purposes.
One suspect believed to be a collaborator was arrested during the operation. He, along with recovered items, has been handed over to the police at Ezeagu Division for further investigation.
The Army urged residents of Imezi Owa and nearby communities to remain calm, avoid supporting criminal groups, and continue cooperating with security agencies.
The Headquarters of the Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, also warned members of the banned IPOB/ESN group and their supporters to stop illegal activities or face full military action.
It added that ongoing operations will continue across the South-East to dismantle armed groups, restore peace, and deny criminals freedom of movement in the region.
