The Labour Party in Sokoto State has elected Yawale Abubakar as its new State Chairman, as the party moves to strengthen its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The election was held on Saturday during the party’s state congress at its secretariat in Sokoto, with delegates from all 23 local government areas taking part in the process.
The Electoral Committee Chairman, Prof. Mahmud Muhammad, announced Abubakar as the consensus candidate and described the exercise as peaceful, well organised, and credible. He said the process reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were also present to monitor the congress.
In his acceptance speech, Abubakar promised to rebuild and reposition the party in Sokoto State through stronger grassroots mobilisation, fair internal processes, and inclusive leadership.
He also criticised the current situation in the state, pointing to issues such as unemployment, insecurity, rising cost of living, and general hardship, which he said show poor governance affecting residents.
According to him, the Labour Party plans to increase its presence across communities, building on its performance in the 2023 elections, which he believes shows the party can do even better in future polls.
He added that the new leadership will focus on strengthening party structures, involving young people and women more actively, and promoting issue-based politics ahead of the next election cycle.
Also speaking, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Aminu Umar, praised the peaceful conduct of the congress and urged the new executives to promote unity, discipline, and accountability within the party.
The event ended with the election of a full set of state executives, as members expressed renewed confidence in the direction of the Labour Party in Sokoto State ahead of 2027.
