The management of Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin, has taken legal steps against two individuals accused of attacking medical staff while they were performing their official duties at the hospital.
The hospital said it filed a petition to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, which led to the arraignment of the suspects at a Magistrate Court in Ilorin.
The Chief Medical Director of KWASUTH, Prof. Bola Ahmed Abdulkadir, confirmed the development while speaking with journalists in his office.
He explained that the move was necessary due to the rising cases of violence against healthcare workers, adding that the action was meant to discourage similar behaviour in the future.
The two defendants, identified as Abdulsalam Hamzat and Adetunji Victoria, were accused of assaulting hospital staff during the course of their duties within the facility.
They were later brought before Magistrate M. G. Olujide at the Magistrate Court in Ilorin.
During the hearing, their lawyer, Toyin Mohammed Onaolapo, made an oral bail application, arguing that the alleged offence was not a capital crime and was therefore eligible for bail under the law.
The court agreed to the request and granted the defendants bail in the sum of ₦100,000 each. They were also required to provide two responsible sureties who reside within the court’s jurisdiction and submit affidavits of means.
In addition, the court ordered both defendants to write formal apology letters addressed to the complainants through the Chief Medical Director of KWASUTH, and to also submit undertakings promising not to engage in similar conduct again.
Prof. Abdulkadir reiterated that the hospital and relevant authorities remain committed to ensuring the case is fully prosecuted, saying it will help reduce attacks on medical workers in the state.
The case has been adjourned to 22nd of next month for further hearing, according to the hospital’s Corporate Affairs office.
