The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigeria to quickly put in place a clear national plan and strong policies to guide how modern technologies—especially artificial intelligence (AI)—are used for growth and development.
He made this statement while speaking at a gathering of pro-chancellors from state-owned universities held in Kano. The event focused on how AI can improve university leadership, global partnerships, and international rankings.
Sanusi stressed that Nigeria must act fast to stay relevant in today’s digital world. He said the country needs proper direction and must prepare itself for the realities of the modern age.
He also encouraged universities to play a leading role in shaping Nigeria’s AI future. According to him, higher institutions should go beyond teaching and research by helping to create policies that will move the country forward.
The Emir warned that Nigeria could fall behind other nations that are already making progress in AI. He pointed to Ghana as an example of a country that is investing in AI development, youth training, and data systems to boost its economy.
Speaking further, Sanusi highlighted the importance of universities in national development. He said they contribute greatly to governance, economic growth, and scientific advancement. He added that without strong academic input, civic responsibility and accountability in society may decline.
He also praised state governments for supporting pro-chancellors in improving how universities are managed.
The Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria (COPSUN), Ayodeji Omole, said the meeting was important for bringing stakeholders together to solve challenges affecting public universities.
He explained that Nigeria has more than 60 state universities, making it necessary for regular discussions to improve coordination, policy direction, and leadership across the system. He added that universities must embrace innovation and proper planning to keep up with global changes.
Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Suleiman Wali Sani, said education remains a major focus for his administration.
He noted that the state government is investing in school infrastructure, digital learning tools, research, and staff development to improve the quality of education and make its universities more competitive globally.
The governor added that the conference offers a chance to come up with practical ideas to improve funding, boost innovation, and raise academic standards in Nigerian universities.
