Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has argued that Nigeria needs energetic and active leadership, saying the country’s highest office should not be occupied by people who may struggle with the physical demands of the position.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV on Wednesday, Adebayo stressed that leading a country as large and complex as Nigeria requires strength, endurance and the ability to handle intense responsibilities.
Using football as an example, he explained that while passion and experience are important, certain roles demand a level of physical fitness that becomes more difficult with advanced age.
According to him, no matter how much someone loves football, it would be unrealistic for an 80-year-old person to compete at the highest level with the Super Eagles.
Adebayo said the same principle applies to the presidency, noting that the office requires constant engagement, decision-making and the stamina to respond to national challenges.
The SDP flagbearer also suggested that public service is not limited to occupying the presidency, adding that experienced politicians can still contribute to national development in other capacities.
Referring to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Adebayo stated that becoming president should not be viewed as the only avenue through which a political leader can serve the country.
He further recalled comments previously made by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who reportedly said he would have preferred to assume office at a younger age.
Adebayo maintained that Nigeria’s future would be better served by leaders who possess both the experience and energy needed to meet the demands of governance in a rapidly changing world.
