The unique story behind Folarin Balogun’s eligibility to represent the United States has come to light following his impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Monaco forward was one of the standout players as the United States defeated Paraguay 4-1, scoring twice to help his team secure a convincing victory.
Although Balogun is of Nigerian heritage and grew up in England, he was eligible to play for the United States because he was born in New York.
According to a story shared by his mother, Florence, his American citizenship came about due to an unexpected situation during her pregnancy.
While pregnant with Balogun, Florence travelled from London to the United States. However, when she attempted to fly back to the United Kingdom from New York, the airline reportedly refused to allow her board the flight because she was already seven months pregnant.
As a result, she remained in the United States and later gave birth to Balogun in Brooklyn, New York.
A few weeks after his birth, Florence returned to London with her son, where he spent most of his childhood and began his football journey.
Balogun joined Arsenal’s youth academy at a young age and progressed through the ranks, eventually representing England at several youth levels. He also had opportunities with the United States youth teams before making a final decision on his international future.
In 2023, the talented striker committed to representing the United States at senior level, a move that has since paid off for the American national team.
Now a key player for the USMNT, Balogun continues to justify that decision with important goals and strong performances on football’s biggest stages.
