A suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to Nigerian soldiers in Gwoza, according to security reports.
The fighter reportedly gave himself up to troops of the 192 Battalion while they were on duty along the Gwoza–Limankara road on May 7 at about 12:35pm.
Security sources said the man told soldiers that he escaped from a terrorist camp in the Drume area, close to the Mandara Mountains.
When he surrendered, troops reportedly found ₦3,500 on him.
He is now in military custody, where he is being questioned and processed for further investigation and profiling.
Reports indicate that the man’s surrender is part of a wider trend, as more suspected fighters have been giving up in recent months. This is believed to be the result of ongoing military pressure and continuous operations targeting terrorist hideouts in the North-East.
The Nigerian military has also been carrying out regular clearance operations, patrols, and targeted missions across different parts of Borno State. These efforts aim to dismantle remaining insurgent camps and encourage more fighters to surrender.
