A commercial bus driver was confirmed dead on Tuesday after a serious road accident involving multiple vehicles along the Cele area of Lagos, heading towards Oshodi.
The tragic incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement released by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the agency, the crash involved a commercial mini-bus, commonly known as a “Korokpe,” and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck bearing registration number EPE 554 YC.
Preliminary reports from security personnel at the scene revealed that the bus driver sustained severe injuries during the collision and died on the spot before emergency assistance could save him.
LASTMA officials who were carrying out routine traffic monitoring in the area quickly responded to the emergency. They secured the accident scene, managed traffic flow, and worked to prevent further disruption along the busy route.
The agency stated that its personnel collaborated with officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Cele-Ijesha Division to recover the victim’s body. The remains were later handed over to his family members.
To ease congestion and restore normal movement, the damaged vehicles involved in the accident were removed from the road shortly after the incident.
The vehicles were subsequently transferred to the police for a detailed investigation aimed at uncovering the circumstances that led to the crash and determining possible responsibility.
“The vehicles have been handed over to the police for a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and underlying causes of the accident, as well as any legal issues arising from it,” the statement explained.
Despite the fatal incident, traffic was successfully restored within a short period due to the swift intervention of emergency responders and traffic officials.
Reacting to the development, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased driver and urged motorists to prioritise safety while on the road.
He also appealed to commercial drivers and other road users to obey traffic regulations and drive responsibly to avoid preventable accidents that often lead to loss of lives and property.
