Nigerian music star Shallipopi has opened up on why he moved away from rap music and focused more on singing and Amapiano sounds.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the ‘Cast’ crooner explained that he started his music career as a rapper and trap artist before changing direction because of money and survival in the music industry.
According to Shallipopi, Amapiano music brings in more income and commercial success than rap in Nigeria, which influenced his decision to embrace the genre fully.
The singer said rap remains his first love, but he found it difficult to make good money from it due to the low level of support for rap music among Nigerian listeners.
He added that although he enjoys rap, Amapiano currently gives him better opportunities and helps him earn more from his music career.
Shallipopi also spoke about why he rejected the Headies award for Best Rap Song, which his hit track ‘Cast’ won last year.
The singer explained that he was not comfortable being labeled only as a rapper. He stated that he wanted recognition for both his singing and rap abilities instead of being placed in just one category.
