Nigerian singer BNXN has strongly reacted to comments made by American rapper Fat Joe regarding the origin of Afrobeats.
According to reports, Fat Joe recently made claims during a podcast that Afrobeats began in Jamaica. He also suggested that BNXN changed his former stage name “Buju” because of Jamaican dancehall artist Buju Banton.
The statements quickly sparked reactions online.
Responding through his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, BNXN rejected the claims and advised the rapper to take time to learn more about African music and its history.
He criticized the remarks as misleading and accused Fat Joe of spreading wrong information about the Afrobeats genre and its artists.
In his post, BNXN wrote that the negativity and misinformation being shared about African music was unnecessary, and he urged the rapper to “educate himself.”
The singer also used strong words in his response, further showing his anger over the claims, while making it clear that Afrobeats did not originate from Jamaica as suggested.
