The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has stepped up safety checks across ferry terminals in Lagos, removing 120 damaged life jackets from circulation during a recent enforcement operation.
The inspection exercise, carried out on Friday, was part of efforts to ensure strict compliance with safety rules and improve standards in the state’s water transport system.
Officials visited several jetties and terminals, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut, where they checked boats and safety equipment used by operators.
LASWA said the focus of the operation was to confirm that boats were in good condition for travel and that passengers were provided with proper and approved life jackets.
During the exercise, 120 faulty life jackets were discovered and immediately removed to prevent any safety risks for passengers using the waterways.
The agency explained that while some operators followed the rules correctly, others were warned over boats that needed repairs before they could safely carry passengers.
It stressed that meeting safety standards—especially having certified life jackets and seaworthy boats—is mandatory for all operators.
LASWA also warned that similar inspections will continue across all ferry routes and jetties in Lagos to ensure full compliance with safety regulations.
The authority reminded operators of their responsibility to protect passengers by maintaining safe boats and providing usable life-saving equipment at all times.
It reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more reliable, and well-regulated water transport system across Lagos State.
