The United States branch of the Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group (NDMG-USA) has warned that it may take legal steps against American lawmaker Kimberly Daniels over her recent comments on Nigeria’s security situation.
The group said Daniels made serious allegations, including claims that the Sultan of Sokoto was involved in the country’s insecurity crisis. She also called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, from office.
In a statement released on Saturday, the president of NDMG-USA, Cosmas Collins, strongly criticised the remarks. He described them as offensive, baseless, and irresponsible, warning that the group would go to court in the United States if Daniels does not withdraw her statements and apologise.
Daniels, who represents District 14 in the Florida House of Representatives, had earlier made public comments linking the Sultan of Sokoto to insecurity in northern Nigeria, a claim that has sparked strong reactions.
Responding to this, Collins said the group was deeply concerned about what it called an unfair attack on the Sultan. He explained that the Sultan of Sokoto is widely respected and plays an important role in promoting peace, unity, and religious understanding across Nigeria.
According to him, accusing such a figure without clear proof is not only damaging but also disrespectful to millions of Nigerians who value the traditional institution. He added that the comments could harm Nigeria’s reputation and create unnecessary tension both within the country and internationally.
Collins stressed that the group is ready to take legal action if Daniels fails to correct her statements. He also pointed out that while it is normal for the global community to be concerned about Nigeria’s security challenges, such discussions must be based on facts and a proper understanding of the situation.
He noted that insecurity in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires cooperation and careful handling, not misleading claims or public accusations against respected leaders like the Sultan of Sokoto.
The group also advised foreign officials to be more careful in their public statements and to focus on constructive engagement instead of making claims that could worsen tensions.
NDMG-USA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s image abroad and encouraging accurate and responsible conversations about the country’s security challenges.
