The Lagos State Government has provided new details on the return of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which will officially resume on April 25.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the clean-up exercise will now take place on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 am and 8:30 am. During this period, movement across the state will be restricted to allow residents to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage areas.
He explained that the exercise is aimed at improving environmental hygiene and restoring a cleaner city culture across Lagos.
Wahab noted that the programme was previously launched in a symbolic form along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road on March 14 before its full implementation.
The sanitation exercise is returning nearly ten years after it was suspended in November 2016, following a court decision that affected the enforcement of movement restrictions during clean-up hours.
The commissioner warned that residents who fail to comply with the new guidelines will face penalties as provided by law.
He added that enforcement will be handled by a joint team made up of officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and local government sanitation officers.
According to him, monitoring teams will carry out inspections during and after the sanitation period to ensure compliance, and offenders will be punished under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
Wahab also revealed that LAWMA will deploy trucks during the exercise to collect and dispose of bagged waste generated by residents.
To encourage participation, the government plans to introduce rewards for well-performing communities.
He said prizes will be given to the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and even the cleanest street to promote healthy competition and community involvement.
The commissioner urged residents to fully support the initiative, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in keeping Lagos clean, safe, and environmentally sustainable.
