Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has advised Nigerians preparing for the 2026 Hajj to behave responsibly and protect the country’s reputation while abroad. He warned that how they act during the pilgrimage will affect how Nigeria is seen around the world.
He gave this message on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the official start of the Hajj airlift at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The ceremony marked the beginning of this year’s Hajj operations, as about 500 pilgrims from Kogi State boarded the first flight to Saudi Arabia. Officials say more than 50,000 Nigerians are expected to take part in the 2026 pilgrimage.
Speaking at the event, Shettima explained that the journey is not only about religion but also about national pride. He told the pilgrims that they are representing Nigeria and must show good character at all times.
According to him, they should display discipline, patience, humility, and honesty throughout their stay. He also reminded them to respect and obey the laws of Saudi Arabia, noting that they are guests in another country.
The vice president added that both the government and the pilgrims have roles to play. While the government will work to ensure a safe and well-organized exercise, the pilgrims must act in ways that reflect the values of Nigeria.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to protecting Nigerians and ensuring their welfare both at home and abroad.
Other officials who spoke at the event also highlighted the importance of safety, proper coordination, and good conduct during the pilgrimage.
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, encouraged the pilgrims to pray for peace and progress in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, represented by Captain Mamud Abdullahi, assured that all arrangements have been made for smooth flight operations.
The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Ismail Abba Yusuf, also said the commission is working to improve transparency and make the journey easier for all pilgrims.
