Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has shared his opinion on the kind of player the club should bring in for new head coach Xabi Alonso ahead of the upcoming season.

Alonso is set to officially take charge of Chelsea on July 1. The Spanish coach was recently spotted at the club’s Cobham training ground as he prepares to begin work with the squad.

As part of his plans for the new season, Chelsea are expected to be active in the transfer market to strengthen key areas of the team.

Di Matteo believes Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali would be a strong addition for the Blues. He described the Italian international as a “top-quality player” with the right age and experience to improve the squad.

Speaking in an interview with Ladbrokes, Di Matteo praised Tonali’s ability but also questioned whether Chelsea truly need another midfielder at the moment.

He pointed out that the club already has several strong options in midfield, including Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia. According to him, any move for Tonali may depend on whether one of those players leaves the club.

Di Matteo said he would personally like to see Tonali in a Chelsea shirt, but added that the club’s main transfer focus should be on other areas of the pitch this summer.

His comments have added to ongoing discussions about Chelsea’s transfer strategy as the club prepares for a new era under Xabi Alonso.
