Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the federal government to stay away from the activities of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, saying the party needs space to grow peacefully.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja shortly after meeting with members of the party, following his recent involvement with the movement.
He urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow him and other members to focus on building the party without pressure or interference.
According to him, the goal of the movement is to create a country where ordinary citizens can rise to success regardless of background.
He explained that both he and other political actors came from different parties in previous elections, but are now trying to work together toward a common political direction.
Obi said he and his supporters are asking for respect for democracy and freedom for political groups to organise themselves without disruption.
He also made a strong appeal for peace, saying the group does not want conflict, legal battles, or unnecessary court cases surrounding the party’s formation and activities.
He urged party members to avoid dragging internal issues to court, stressing that their focus is on building a political platform, not engaging in legal disputes.
Obi concluded by calling on all stakeholders, including the judiciary, to help ensure that political parties are allowed to develop without constant litigation or interference.
