Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has called for the establishment of a United States military base in Borno State as part of efforts to fight Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.
He made the suggestion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the ongoing security challenges in the region.
According to him, the Mandara Mountains, due to their strategic location, could serve as a strong monitoring point for security forces tracking insurgent movements around Borno, including areas close to the Sambisa Forest.
Ndume said he strongly supports the idea, adding that foreign military assistance could help reduce the level of insecurity affecting the region.
“I am fully in support. I am even appealing that the Americans should come to Gwoza and take over the Mandara Mountains. It will help reduce insecurity,” he said.
The senator explained that better surveillance and coordinated military action from such a location could disrupt the routes and supply networks used by armed groups operating in the North-East.
He also stressed that the Nigerian military needs more equipment, manpower, and support to effectively deal with the security situation.
“You cannot do it alone without enough boots on the ground. The Nigerian Army needs proper resources,” he added.
Ndume further noted that strengthening security operations around the Mandara Mountains, Sambisa Forest, and nearby communities would go a long way in reducing insurgent activities and improving safety in affected areas.
