Protest turns violent in Calabar as Cross River students react to colleagues’ death
Students of the University of Cross River State staged a protest on Monday in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, following the death of some of their colleagues in a road accident.
Reports say the students had travelled to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State for a friendly football match. However, they were involved in a serious crash while returning to Calabar.
It was gathered that three students later died from injuries sustained in the accident. Some accounts also claimed that they were not immediately treated at a hospital, which increased anger among students.
The situation escalated as protesting students took to the streets, blocking roads and damaging some government property in the city.
The protesters later moved towards the government house area, demanding justice and better treatment for injured students.
Security operatives were deployed to control the situation, and there were reports of gunshots as officers tried to disperse the crowd. A video shared online showed protesters running in different directions after the sound of gunfire.
At the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
