Former Super Eagles defender Efe Sodje has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pointing to deeper issues beyond the players on the pitch.
The Super Eagles will not be among the teams competing at the global tournament after falling short during the African qualification campaign.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup ended after a painful penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team, who went on to book their place at the tournament.
Reacting to the disappointment, Sodje said it was difficult to understand how a country blessed with so much football talent could miss out on such a major competition.
According to the former defender, the problem cannot be blamed solely on the players. He believes those responsible for managing football in the country must also take responsibility for the outcome.
Sodje argued that poor planning, questionable decisions, and the lack of a strong football structure played a significant role in Nigeria’s unsuccessful qualification campaign.
He stressed that having talented players alone is not enough to achieve success, adding that proper leadership and effective administration are equally important.
The former Super Eagles star said the country must take a closer look at how football is being run if it hopes to avoid similar disappointments in the future.
With the World Cup now out of reach, Nigeria’s attention will shift to the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team will be aiming to bounce back and restore confidence among supporters.
