Former Andy Townsend has suggested that Liam Delap should consider leaving Chelsea and seek regular playing time elsewhere, with Everton emerging as a potential destination.
Speaking to OLBG, Townsend questioned whether Delap is the right fit for Chelsea’s style of play, claiming the young striker has struggled to make the same impact he showed during his time at Ipswich Town.
According to the former midfielder, Delap appears less confident and less influential at Stamford Bridge, despite arriving with high expectations.
Townsend noted that some talented players often find it difficult to settle at certain clubs, pointing out that football history is filled with examples of big-name transfers that failed to deliver as expected.
He argued that Delap would benefit from joining a team where he can play consistently and become a key figure in the attack rather than spending long periods on the bench.
The former Chelsea star believes Everton could provide the ideal environment for the striker to rebuild confidence and rediscover his best form, especially given the club’s need for a reliable goalscorer.
Townsend also claimed that Delap has not yet shown enough to convince Chelsea supporters that he can lead the line for a club with ambitions of competing at the highest level.
In his view, the striker currently looks uncomfortable in the team and has struggled to adapt to the demands of playing for one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
He warned that a lack of regular football could slow Delap’s development, stressing that young players need consistent minutes on the pitch to improve and maintain their sharpness.
Townsend concluded that a move away from Chelsea could be the best option for the forward if he wants to revive his career and fulfil his potential.
Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town last year but has yet to establish himself as a regular starter or make a major impact for the West London side.
