The National Emergency Management Agency has warned that 12 local government areas in Kebbi State are at risk of serious flooding as the 2026 rainy season reaches its peak.
The warning was given during a stakeholder meeting on the 2026 National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign held in Birnin Kebbi.
The agency said the highest flood risk is expected in September, when water levels in the River Niger may rise and overflow into nearby communities.
Representing the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, the Director of the North-West Zonal Office, Aliyu Shehu Kafindongi, explained that the flooding could damage farmlands, homes, roads, and other key infrastructure.
He added that rising water levels may continue into October and November, meaning affected communities could face prolonged disruption.
The high-risk local government areas listed include Argungu, Augie, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Fakai, Koko/Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Shanga, Zuru, and Yauri.
NEMA urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, women associations, and the media to support public awareness campaigns on flood safety and preparedness.
The Executive Secretary of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the state government has already put measures in place to respond quickly in case of flooding.
Also speaking, the State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Nasiru Karofi, called for stronger public education and early warning awareness in vulnerable communities to reduce the impact of the expected floods.
