Kwara Police deny claims of unlawful detention of 16-year-old girl in Arandun
The Kwara State Police Command has rejected reports accusing officers of illegally detaining a 16-year-old girl in Arandun, located in Irepodun Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Monday, the police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the information circulating on social media was misleading and did not reflect what actually happened.
The clarification came after videos went viral online showing the teenager at a police station, which led to protests from some residents who believed she was wrongly arrested.
According to the police, the case began after a report of housebreaking and theft was filed on April 30 at the Arandun Police Division.
The command explained that the main suspect, a 19-year-old man identified as Timothy Aransiola, fled after the complaint was made and has been under search by officers.
Police also alleged that the suspect’s younger sister, Esther Aransiola, was involved in helping him avoid arrest. This led to her being invited for questioning on May 1 over suspicion of assisting a suspect.
The statement said the teenager was briefly questioned and treated according to standard police procedures before being released on bail to a guardian.
The command insisted that her detention was lawful, brief, and carried out within legal guidelines, dismissing claims of abuse or wrongful treatment.
It added that efforts are still ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect.
The police also urged the public to confirm facts before sharing information online, warning that false reports can create unnecessary tension.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to lawful policing and respect for the rights of all citizens.
