Seven members of a local vigilante group have been killed following a deadly attack by armed bandits on a security camp in Niger State.

The incident happened on Saturday at Matseri Camp in Kotonkoro District, located in Mariga Local Government Area.

According to security analyst Bakatsine, who shared details on X, the attackers were said to have come from the Sangeko area in neighbouring Zamfara State before launching a surprise assault on the vigilante base.

The armed men reportedly stormed the camp and opened fire on the security volunteers stationed there, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Sources said the vigilantes resisted the attack and engaged the bandits in a prolonged gun battle, but were eventually overpowered due to the intensity of the assault.

It was further reported that some of the attackers were also killed during the exchange, although the exact number has not been confirmed.

The latest attack adds to ongoing security challenges in parts of Niger and Zamfara States, where armed groups have continued to target rural communities and security personnel.

At the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
