Habibu Mailemo, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said there is no crisis in the party, stressing that all attention is now on preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Mailemo made this clear during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, where he reacted to concerns about alleged internal disagreements and restructuring within the party.
He explained that what people are calling a crisis is actually normal political activity that comes with election preparation.
“I think the NDC, like every other political party, is working hard to ensure credible candidates emerge who will lead the party into the 2027 general election,” he said.
According to him, it is normal for political parties to experience debates and disagreements during election periods.
“When there is competition, you will naturally hear different issues here and there. But the party has systems in place to manage them and move forward,” he added.
Mailemo also dismissed claims that recent talks about party leadership and structure point to any breakdown within the party.
He said the Kwankwasiyya Movement remains fully committed to unity, discipline, and party stability, while still reviewing recent developments around internal arrangements.
He further stressed that the movement is known for following rules and working within party guidelines.
“Kwankwasiyya is a very disciplined movement. In whatever party we belong to, we always work to make sure it succeeds,” he said.
On concerns about candidate selection and primaries, Mailemo insisted that the process was properly conducted across the country.
He said party primaries were held on the 29th of last month, along with consensus arrangements that involved all key stakeholders.
“The primaries were held nationwide on the 29th, and every process was properly followed,” he explained. “Before that, there were consensus arrangements where nobody was left out.”
He added that the names of successful candidates have already been forwarded to the party leadership in line with electoral rules.
Mailemo maintained that Kwankwasiyya members respect party laws and will not operate outside established procedures.
“We don’t bend the rules. We are law-abiding, and we follow both party guidelines and INEC regulations,” he said.
He also noted that it is hard to separate Kwankwasiyya members from other party members because many people worked together during the process.
According to him, even new entrants into the party took part in the consensus process and primaries without raising objections.
“The process was open and transparent, and no one complained during or after it,” he said.
He added that reports of crisis only started appearing after the primaries had already ended.
The alleged tension in the Kano State chapter of the NDC is linked to delays in releasing the results of the party’s primary elections.
