The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State has appealed to motorists to show greater consideration for cyclists by giving them enough space on the roads and treating them with respect.
The call was made by the Abia State FRSC Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, during activities marking the 2026 United Nations World Bicycle Day celebration in Umuahia on Wednesday.
Ezeoma noted that many bicycle riders face daily challenges on the roads because some drivers fail to respect their rights or allow them adequate room to move safely.
She stressed the need for government authorities, local council leaders, and urban development planners to include the needs of cyclists when designing roads and transport systems.
According to her, modern roads should not be built only for vehicles but should also accommodate people who rely on bicycles for transportation.
The FRSC boss highlighted several benefits of cycling, including reduced traffic congestion, cleaner air, and improved physical health.
She urged drivers to be patient and considerate whenever they encounter cyclists on highways and city roads.
“Motorists should always give cyclists enough space and treat them with dignity and respect. Everyone has a right to use the road safely,” she said.
Ezeoma also encouraged government agencies and development partners to invest in bicycle-friendly infrastructure as part of efforts to promote sustainable transportation and safer communities.
While addressing cyclists, she advised them to follow traffic regulations, wear protective helmets, and use reflective clothing to improve visibility, especially during low-light conditions.
Also speaking at the event, Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, encouraged residents, particularly young people, to adopt cycling as an alternative means of transportation.
He said increased use of bicycles would help cut down carbon emissions, reduce dependence on fuel-powered vehicles, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
