Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has moved to address concerns over teachers’ welfare by announcing the creation of a committee to examine salary complaints raised by primary school teachers across the state.
The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Birnin Kebbi attended by teachers, officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, education administrators, local government chairmen, and other key participants in the education sector.
According to Idris, the committee will investigate issues linked to the implementation of the new minimum wage and other salary-related matters affecting teachers in public primary schools.
He explained that the panel would be led by a qualified professional and would be given 30 days to complete its assignment and present recommendations to the government.
The governor, who is a former teacher and labour leader, assured participants that the concerns of educators would receive serious attention.
“As someone who has spent years in the teaching profession and labour movement, I understand the importance of teachers’ welfare. Their concerns deserve careful review, and we are committed to finding lasting solutions,” he said.
He noted that the objective of the committee is to identify the root causes of the complaints and recommend practical steps to resolve them.
To support the review process, Idris directed all local government chairmen to provide detailed records of their allocations and salary expenditures before and after the introduction of the new minimum wage.
He also instructed Education Secretaries and Directors of Finance within Local Government Education Authorities to verify all financial figures submitted by their councils.
The governor stressed that accurate data would help the government make informed decisions on salary structures and address lingering concerns among teachers.
During the meeting, stakeholders highlighted salary gaps between primary and secondary school teachers and urged the state government to consider measures that would promote fairness within the education sector.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government after completing its review.
