The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a work-free day to allow Muslims in the state celebrate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in an official statement released by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Aderibigbe Kayode Rasheed, on Tuesday.
The government extended its congratulations to Muslim communities across the state and expressed hope that the new Islamic year would bring greater peace, progress and unity to Osun and its people.
Residents were encouraged to use the occasion to promote understanding, tolerance and togetherness. The commissioner also advised citizens to avoid actions or remarks that could create tension or division within communities.
According to the state government, the celebration should serve as a period of reflection, prayer and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence among people of different backgrounds.
Hijrah, which marks the start of the Islamic calendar, commemorates the historic journey of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah. The event remains one of the most significant moments in Islamic history and is observed by Muslims around the world as the beginning of a new lunar year.
The Osun State Government urged residents to celebrate responsibly and continue supporting efforts aimed at maintaining harmony and development across the state.
