Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has described Wednesday’s international friendly against Portugal as an important test for the Nigerian team.

Éric Chelle’s squad head into the match in strong form, having recorded four wins and two draws in their last six games. Since Chelle took charge in January 2025, the team has also suffered just one defeat in 24 matches in normal time.

Although Portugal, who are heading to the 2026 World Cup, are seen as a very strong side, Ndidi says Nigeria are fully prepared for the challenge.

Speaking at a press conference in Leiria on Tuesday, he said the game will help measure the team’s progress and growth.

“It will be a very good test for us. We faced Poland in the first test, and Portugal is also a top team with excellent players,” Ndidi said.

“It will be a massive test for us as a group, for our vision and our goals as a team. It will help our development.

“We don’t worry about who we are playing against. Even if it’s one of the biggest teams in the world, what matters is that we are ready to win. We are focused on our philosophy and our game plan.”

Portugal defeated Nigeria 4-0 the last time both countries met four years ago.
