Over 300 athletes took part in the recently concluded 2026 National Open Taekwondo Trials held at the multipurpose hall of the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The three-day competition was described as a major success by the President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Tayo Popoola, who said the event helped uncover new talents that could represent Nigeria in future international tournaments.
According to her, the trials were organised to identify and develop young athletes who have the potential to grow into world-class competitors within the next few years.
She expressed satisfaction with the level of performance displayed, saying the competition showed that Nigeria has a strong future in Taekwondo.
“The display of talents here at this National Open Trials has wowed me. I am happy to say our future is bright, as these athletes will form the base of our national team for international championships,” she said.
She also stressed the importance of the Kukkiwon Dan Grading certification, explaining that it is a key requirement for athletes who want to compete at global Taekwondo events.
Popoola further confirmed that preparations have been completed for Nigeria’s participation in the upcoming African Taekwondo Championships, which will be held in Bamako, Mali, from May 29 to June 2, 2026.
